Before You Book — Quick Check!
Let's make sure you are a good fit!
How State Disability (SDI) Works in California (aka how you get paid to take time off)
Let’s say you’re pregnant, recovering from birth, or bondin with your new baby! — California might actually pay you while you’re out.
What is SDI?
It’s short for State Disability Insurance. If you qualify, it pays you every week you can’t work for medical reasons + bonding time! (for both expecting parents who pay into it!)
How much do you get?
Most people get 70–90% of their paycheck, tax-free!
✅ How to Check:
Look at your paystub or W-2. You’re good if you see:
-
CA-SDI
-
CASDI
-
CA-Disability
Here is where to look on a paystub or W2:

❌ Who doesn’t qualify?
If your paystub says stuff like:
• VPDI
(a private plan)
• You’re self-employed and do not pay yourself as a W2
• You work for a federal job (like USPS, military, VA hospital)
• Your company is out-of-state and doesn’t offer it

💰 Most clients get:
This is money you’re already eligible for if you’re paying into CA-SDI. But the process is confusing — and mistakes can cost you thousands. That’s why I made this.
Here is the link to the EDD calculator of what you would get weekly!
Real Talk — Why You’re Here:
You might be feeling like:
-
“How much time off can I even take?”
-
“Is it paid? Do I use PTO? What does HR mean?”
-
“I looked at the EDD website and I’m more confused than ever.”
-
“I want to get it right and not lose money.”
Yeah… I’ve been there. I messed up my own claim after having my son. I got denied and nearly lost $30K. That’s why I built this service — so you don’t have to go through that.

Still Not Sure?
These are some common questions that come up for folks:
-
“Do I file the day I stop working?”
- What is this "continued certification of benefits" I'm getting from the EDD?
- If I quit my job, do I have to pay back the state money?
- If I get fired, can I still get maternity leave money from the state?
-
“Can my doctor extend disability?”
-
“Is 4 weeks before due date paid?”
-
“What’s the difference between SDI and PFL?”
- How does the EDD know my disability was extended? And what is this "back to work" date?
-
“What is this "notice of computation from the EDD- and does this mean my claim was approved? How do I see that?
- I got a raise right before I went out- does that change my benefit amount?
- I got a new job in the middle of being pregnant, can I still take paid leave? How is my job protected?
-
“How do I make sure I don’t owe money back?”
- What determines if they pay you 70 or 90%?
Then yep — you need this. And I’ve got you.
TL;DR
This system is confusing on purpose.
HR won’t explain it. The EDD doesn’t make it easy.
But I’ve helped 900+ California parents take 7+ months off, get paid, and avoid major mistakes.
